EARLY HISTORY OF REDDITCH

Wickets were falling in Redditch from as early as 1848 when a cricket club was formed. It is thought that Victoria Cricket Club was the original team although a game is on record from 1850.Redditch School defeated King Edwards School, Bromsgrove, by five wickets, but the sport was only played now and again.Men left the cricket field and went to work in factories by the age of 19 or 20 to support their wives. This led to the game being played by mainly professional people like shopkeepers. The club actually took on an All England XI in 1863, attracting 1500 to the match, which was drawn.

The club moved to its present site in 1896.

A friendly team ran from 1900 on Saturdays and Wednesdays, along with a league team which held the Championship Cup when the Redditch and District League disbanded.

ST Huins, WG Thomas, RW Michie and Albert Griffin were all instrumental in running the club.

Redditch CC 1ST XI slipped to a second successive defeat on Saturday as Droitwich sneaked home in a low scoring thriller winning by just two wickets. Once again the pitch was ideally suited for seam bowling and Redditch who batted first could only muster 92 with Chris Weaver the pick of the batsman finishing 28 not out. Redditch needed early wickets and pace bowler Aidan Andrews had a day to remember claiming the first seven Droitwich wickets to fall as the visitors looked set to pull off an amazing victory, nevertheless Droitwich chipped away and achieved their target largely thanks to Matt Biggs[17] to take 20 points, and claim their second victory of the Season. Saturday Redditch will be looking to get back on track with a trip to newly promoted Hagley and will be without the services of Skipper Luke Davis and Tom Phelan

Redditch 2nd xi finally got their Season underway and some excellent bowling from the youngsters saw Wormelow bowled out for just 150, the highlight of the day was a superb hat trick who took 4/13 off just 4 overs, well supported by Matt Grubb 3/21 and Perry Derrick 3/66. Redditch wasted no time in reply as opener Geoff Eley 61* and Craig Wilkes[35] guided the home side to victory by 5 wickets.

The 3rd XI got their League campaign underway with a victory by 59 runs against Stone Noman Chowdry [50]the highlight of the innings as Redditch finished on 123 all out.In reply the visitors struggled to 64 all out, Harvey Chawner taking 3 wickets for just 6 runs .

The 4th's start their Season on Saturday when Stourport are the visitors to HDA.
